Tally Data Analysis: Ask Your Tally ERP Questions in Plain English
Tally holds the most important numbers in many Indian businesses and makes them awkward to question. The standard reports answer standard questions. Everything else becomes an export to Excel, a pivot table and an hour of checking. This guide lists the questions worth asking your Tally data, and shows how to ask them in plain English instead.

Why Tally data is hard to analyse
- Reports are fixed. Tally's built-in reports are excellent for standard views. A question such as "which customers pay us slowest over the last two quarters" needs a custom view.
- Exports go stale. An Excel export is a snapshot. By the time the pivot table is built, the books have moved.
- Every analyst pivots differently. Two people exporting the same ledger can produce two different totals.
- The expert is the bottleneck. Often one accountant or one consultant knows how to get the number, and everyone else waits.
Questions worth asking your Tally data
These are the kinds of questions finance leads and business owners ask every week. Each can be typed as written.
Sales and customers
- Who were my top 10 customers by sales last quarter?
- How did sales this month compare with the same month last year?
- Which products had falling sales over the last three months?
Receivables and payables
- Which customers have invoices outstanding for more than 60 days?
- What is my total receivable by customer, highest first?
- Which vendors am I due to pay this week?
Profit, cash and expenses
- What was my profit and loss for the last financial year?
- What is my cash position today?
- Which expense heads grew fastest this quarter?
- What was net profit by month this year?
A tip for any tool: say what you mean. "Last financial year" leaves less room for misreading than "last year".
How it works
- Connect Tally. Link your Tally data as a source. Trinetro profiles the data and builds the semantic model for you.
- Ask. Type the question in plain English.
- Check the answer. Each answer comes with a reasoning trace showing what was used, so an accountant can verify it.
- Save or share. Save the chart, put it in a notebook, or export it to PDF, Excel, PowerPoint or Word.
Is it safe to connect your books?
Access is default-deny. A new member sees nothing until an admin grants it, and grants can be narrowed to individual tables. Connections and encrypted credentials are deleted when the last person in the workspace signs out. Read more on the security page.
Tally and the rest of your stack
Most Indian businesses run more than Tally. Trinetro also connects Razorpay, Zoho, Shopify, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Excel and Google Sheets, and can answer questions that span more than one source. For a database-first walkthrough, see MySQL to reports without SQL.
Frequently asked questions
Can I analyse Tally data in Excel?
Yes, by exporting reports or vouchers and building pivot tables, but the export is a snapshot and every analyst can build it differently. Asking questions of the data directly avoids the export step.
Do I need SQL or coding to analyse Tally data with Trinetro?
No. You type the question in plain English.
Does Trinetro work with Tally ERP?
Yes. Tally ERP is one of its supported data sources, alongside Zoho, Razorpay, Shopify, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Excel and Google Sheets.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. The Cat plan is free for 30 days with no credit card, and there is a guided demo on sample data that needs only an email. See pricing.
Is my accounting data safe?
Access is default-deny and enforced per member, credentials are encrypted, and connections are deleted when the last person signs out.
